Brother's CO₂ Emissions Reduction Target Certified by the Science Based Targets Initiative as Achieving 1.5°C Target

Brother Industries, Ltd. (President: Ichiro Sasaki) today announced that its medium-term CO₂ emissions reduction target for FY2030 under the Brother Group Environmental Vision 2050 revised in October 2021 has been certified by the international Science Based Targets (SBT) initiative as a science-based emission reduction target for achieving the 1.5°C target.

In March 2018, the Brother Group established the Brother Group Environmental Vision 2050 as the Group's environmental goals to contribute toward solving environmental issues on a global scale, and also set the medium-term targets for FY2030 as milestones for the Vision. In the same year, the Brother Group's medium-term CO₂ emissions reduction target was certified by the Science Based Targets initiative as a science-based emission reduction target for achieving the 2°C target of the Paris Agreement. To further strengthen our initiatives to help society develop in a sustainable manner, the Brother Group Environmental Vision 2050 was revised in October 2021 and changes were made to the medium-term targets for FY2030 and Environmental Vision 2050 for reduction of CO₂ emissions. Instead of achieving a 30% reduction from the FY2015 level for Scopes 1^*1 and 2^*2, the target has been raised to a 65% reduction. This target has now been recognized as a target for achieving the 1.5°C target.

CO₂ emissions reduction targets of the Brother Group Environmental Vision 2050

1. "Scope 1" refers to direct greenhouse gas emissions from the activities of a company
2. "Scope 2" refers to indirect emissions from electricity, heat, and steam purchased and used by a company
3. "Scope 3" refers to all indirect emissions not covered by Scope 1 or Scope 2, produced by third parties for the purpose of a company's activities
4. CO₂ emissions produced when procuring parts for products, when using products, and when disposing of products
5. Achieve overall zero CO₂ emissions from the Brother Group

To reduce CO₂ emissions at Brother facilities across the world, Brother is carrying out activities such the promotion of energy-saving activities, energy-generation activities centered on the installation of solar panels, and the purchase of CO₂-free electricity. Going forward, Brother will continue to make positive and continuous efforts to address global environmental issues in all aspects of our corporate activities in order to build a society where sustainable development is achieved.
