As part of its efforts to use resources sustainably in its business activities, Brother has developed paper-based molded pulp as an alternative to plastic foam polystyrene. The molded pulp is used to cushion and protect printers and other products. The molded pulp developed by Brother maintains cushioning performance while reducing size and weight, helping reduce CO2 emissions during production and other processes. These features earned it the Technical Packaging Award at the Japan Packaging Contest 2024 and the WorldStar Award at the international WorldStar Global Packaging Awards 2025.*1
To further advance resource circulation, BIVN has installed a molded pulp production line at its factory and begun production, a first for the Brother Group. At the factory, large quantities of corrugated cardboard used as packaging materials are left over from deliveries of parts and other items. BIVN has established a system to use some of this cardboard as raw material for molded pulp. The molded pulp produced has been used as cushioning material to protect toner cartridges since late August 2026. By reusing materials generated within the factory, this initiative helps make effective use of resources and reduce waste.
Under the Brother Group Environmental Vision 2050, the Brother Group aims to ensure the sustainable use of resources and minimize the environmental impact of waste by maximizing resource circulation toward 2050. It has set a target to reduce the amount of virgin materials used in products*2 by 25%*3 by FY2030 compared to the FY2022 level. The Brother Group will continue to actively pursue initiatives that take the global environment into consideration.
Details of Brother's molded pulp development efforts are featured on its SDGs special website, "Brother SDGs STORY."
